Twenty-three years ago the judge told a very young me I’d never walk the streets again. A lot of guys would give up after that. Not me. I decided to try and do better, and be better. Here I sit years later, author of many books that help prisoners build better lives. On my journey I had the opportunity to be mentored by the late, great Zig Ziglar before he passed away. He encouraged me to keep writing. One of my favorite quotes from Zig is: “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” Funny, but so true.
No matter what you’re going through out there, keep going. Never, ever give up. Get your daily dose of motivation. This is so important in this day and age, because every time we look around there’s another shooting, a variant to COVID, or some other crazy stuff happening. It’s hard not to just say it doesn’t matter. But you do! You matter. You’re a miracle. There’s no one else like you. I have an identical twin brother and we are not exactly alike. No human is. You are amazing and special. Never forget that.
Lastly, if you have a friend or loved one who is locked up, please encourage them. Tell them they matter. Tell them that the best way to predict the future is to create it themselves! Send them a card. Accept their phone call. These are small things, but they are huge to a prisoner. Encourage them to never give up. If we do this daily, we can change the world one prisoner at a time. #PrisonLivesMatter
