How to Email Your Inmate Pen Pal

Signing up for prison email services is simple and secure. Follow the link at the bottom of your potential pen pal’s profile or visit ConnectNetwork.com, JPay.com, Corrlinks, Securus, or GettingOut, depending on which provider the state uses.

Most of these services also have mobile apps, making it easy to stay in touch from your phone or tablet. Keep in mind that communication through these platforms is not free — each message or attachment requires a small fee, often paid with digital “stamps.”

To get started, enter the state and your pen pal’s prison ID number, then create your account. Once set up, you can exchange messages safely and conveniently, building a genuine connection over time.

Getting Started with Your Prison Pen Pal

So you’re ready to start writing, but not sure how to make contact? If you found your pen pal on PrisonFriendship, simply use the PF Messaging tab at the bottom of their profile.

Message Sent

Your message is received by our servers, prepared for secure delivery, and processed for mailing.

Mail Delivery

We print your message, place it in U.S. Mail, and ensure it reaches your pen pal.

Email Forwarding

If listed as a contact, we send your message directly by email for faster communication.

Write a letter to someone in prison

If you prefer the old-fashioned way, handwritten letters are still very meaningful. But remember: every facility has rules.

📌 Check the prison’s website for mail policies (limits on photos, page counts, etc.) before sending.

Use plain white paper & envelopes.

Write with a standard ink pen.

Include your contact info inside the letter.

Avoid perfume, stickers, or colored envelopes.

What to Talk About

Starting a new friendship may feel intimidating, but with time, conversations naturally grow into deeper connections. Remember, just like in the outside world, scammers exist—so approach with patience, caution, and common sense

⚠️ Important Note

We are not affiliated with, nor compensated by, JPay, GTL, or any prison communication providers. All information here is meant to help you connect safely and easily.

Remember: unlike free email in the outside world, all communication within the prison system comes at a cost.

Phone Calls & Other Ways to Connect

As your friendship grows, you may explore other communication methods:

Phone Calls

Most prisons use GTL or SecurusTech (which owns JPay). Calls require deposits, usually starting around $15, with per-minute rates varying by state. Some calls can be paid from the inmate’s account.

Books & Media

Send books through Amazon (Prime = free shipping) or purchase music/media through JPay or GTL. Even a small gift shows thoughtfulness.

❤️ Building a Lasting Friendship

Show respect and kindness to your pen pal by being consistent, even with short messages. If you ever wish to stop writing, be honest and gentle. ✨ Your effort can bring hope, friendship, and encouragement to someone who truly needs it.
