Getting Started with Your Prison Pen Pal
So you’re ready to start writing, but not sure how to make contact? If you found your pen pal on PrisonFriendship, simply use the PF Messaging tab at the bottom of their profile.
Write a letter to someone in prison
If you prefer the old-fashioned way, handwritten letters are still very meaningful. But remember: every facility has rules.
📌 Check the prison’s website for mail policies (limits on photos, page counts, etc.) before sending.
Use plain white paper & envelopes.
Write with a standard ink pen.
Include your contact info inside the letter.
Avoid perfume, stickers, or colored envelopes.
What to Talk About
- Be positive & friendly — introduce yourself as you would with anyone new.
- Look for common interestshobbies, books, music, movies, careers, hometowns.
- Avoid crime questions early on let trust build naturally before discussing sensitive topics.
- Be honest if the connection isn’t a fit, let them know rather than disappearing.

Phone Calls
Most prisons use GTL or SecurusTech (which owns JPay). Calls require deposits, usually starting around $15, with per-minute rates varying by state. Some calls can be paid from the inmate’s account.
Books & Media
Send books through Amazon (Prime = free shipping) or purchase music/media through JPay or GTL. Even a small gift shows thoughtfulness.
